The spirit and energy of living things has always been at the core of my work. It is the temperament of my Asian heritage, lyrical abstractions of nature and life experiences that come to life through the use of line, color, texture, balance and the silent beauty of the depth of glass. Echoing the spirit, energy and beauty of living things, I design elements with striking contrast or color filled with motion and spontaneity to create breathing works of art with glass and ever-changing light. I work with traditional techniques of stained glass craftsmen and stone carvers techniques combined with contemporary glass making processes to manifest the spirit of animate and inanimate objects and images.

Nancy Gong is a first generation born Chinese American who grew up in a working class family in Rochester, NY where she currently lives and works. Founding the studio Gong Glass Works, she began working with stained glass and later embraced stone carving, painting on glass and an array of kiln-formed and cold working glass approaches to glass design. Her formal art foundation studies were at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Craftsmen and SUNY’s Empire State College. Soon after, she embraced the practice of studying with masters from across the US, Germany, Italy, England, Australia, Czech Republic she met at international art glass conferences. She continues that practice today. Most influential are her studies with Narcissus Quagliata.

Since 1979, Nancy has created commissioned glass artwork for a variety of environments including numerous private residences, Rochester Institute of Technology, Telesca Center for Justice, Rochester Museum and Science Center, The Akron Civic Theater and the State of Vermont.

An award winning artist, she has been recognized by AIA Rochester, AIA NYS, Susan B. Anthony House and Museum and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Her work has been profiled on WXXI Arts in Focus, Who’s Who in Contemporary Glass, Design Journal of Korea, Professional Stained Glass, Stained Glass, Glass Studio, Glass Art magazines to name a few.

The artist is a member of the Glass Art Society, American Glass Guild, Stained Glass Association of America, Honorary Member of American Institute of Architects – Rochester and NYS, Pittsford Fine Art, Arena Art Group

Early work of contemporary stained glass has evolved into layered and kiln-formed images manifesting images full of the energy and spirit of living things. Currently accepting select commissions, after 47 years of architectural art glass commissions at Nancy Gong, Gong Glass Works, Nancy turns her attention to her personal work available through galleries and her studio.

When Nancy is not in the studio she is sailing, kayaking, hiking, traveling, and gardening.
